PROJECT FACTS
The Arkansas State Capitol Secure Walkway is 100 feet long and 20 feet below grade. It connects the Capitol's basement and the MAC building, with elevator towers on either side.
Primary power and water utilities to allow the open cut had to be relocated.
The entire walkway and tower structure is cast-in-place concrete and features a robust waterproofing system. Inside, finishes include white oak wainscotting, LVT floors, LED lights, and acoustical ceilings.
Over 90 retention piers were installed to support the sides of the open excavation. The depth of excavation reached 25 feet in some areas.
A soil nail shoring system was installed along the exterior wall of the Capitol basement to support excavation below the Capitol footings.
The Capitol basement service corridor was completely overhauled, with new walls and finishes, allowing for daily foot traffic and additional security stations.
A new 2,000-square-foot cast-in-place mechanical room is 10 feet below grade to accommodate future air handlers that will serve the north end of the Capitol.
